  • Applications of lime can be made at this time if a soil test indicates that it is a necessity. Optimum pH level is 6.5
  • Houseplants should be moved indoors before the first frost.  Although most can tolerate some cool nights, tender varieties like African Violet and Spathiphyllum will not.

I Jim. I listened to your show on 96.9 for the first time this past Sunday. I have a question no one seems to know the answer to. I have 3 Rhododendrons all in the same area. They get morning sun. They are in an area with evergreens and lots of perennial plants. But, they have never flowered. They have been there about 6 years, get bigger every year, but never flower. There is an Azalea in the same area that flowers. What do you think may be the problem? Thanks

The mandevilla can be cut back, but just enough to make it manageable, and brought indoors. Some amount of leaf drop can be expected in the fall as light levels diminish. For now, cut back on the water and donâ??t do any pruning until you notice some new growth. At that time, you can increase water and use a liquid fertilizer. Usually around March, you will notice a dramatic increase in growth.

Love your show Jim. I have two beautiful red mandavilla plants that I'd like to bring into the house. They are very big and trailing over the fence. How much can I cut them back? Thanks

Hi Bill, Thanks for listening! In addition to WTKK, the show can also be heard on WXLM 104.7FM, WBSM AM1420, WZAN AM970, and WADK AM1540. And yes, Rocco was my great-uncle!

You should wait until the ground is completely frozen before mulching any plants. Mulching too early will be more harmful than not mulching at all.
