  • Applications of lime can be made at this time if a soil test indicates that it is a necessity. Optimum pH level is 6.5
  • Houseplants should be moved indoors before the first frost.  Although most can tolerate some cool nights, tender varieties like African Violet and Spathiphyllum will not.

Hi Jim - I live in Chelmsford & last night (10/17) we had our first frost. Can I start to mulch specimens in my garden, or should I wait a couple of weeks. I usually mulch heuchera (seems to do better when I do), gaura, cocosmia, and of course my roses. Thanks!

Unless the plant is overdue for transplanting, early spring would be a better time. The increase volume of soil will provide substantially higher levels of moisture that would not be utilized during the winter season.

Hi Jim - How long do I have to repot my house plants this fall? I know at some point I should wait till spring, but I'm not sure when that is. Thanks!
